WHAT STYLE IS SHIVAKALI YOGA?
We teach a alignment-based 'Vinyasa Flow' practice, culminating in restorative postures, meditation and pranayama. Our practice focuses on presence centered awareness, serving first to awaken the body and break-up stuck energy, and then to soften the mind and nurture our inner being. Uniting the masculine + feminine aspects of practice we find freedom in movement, draw awareness from the mind to the heart, and allow insight to arise naturally.

COURSE OF training
Our Yoga Teacher Training in Bali, Indonesia progresses over 18 days by a map of the chakras, starting at the root and ending with the crown. During the root segment, students will ground their intentions for teaching/practice, and learn the vast history of Yoga from the Vedas through the Upanishads, Buddhism, Yoga Sutras, Bhakti traditions, Tantric Lineages and contemporary Yoga Schools. In the sacral chakra we will uncover the countless layers of the subtle body, learn the principles of Ayurveda, gain an overview of classical Tantra, and practice Yoga Nidra. As we progress through the navel chakra we will explore Yoga's connection with power, fire, and introduce Lakshmi practice & the business of Yoga.
In the heart we encounter the devotional path of Bhakti (devotional) Yoga, as well as ceremony, prayer and healing. We will connect in nature, and receive teachings on the heart of our practice. We share in men's and women's circles as a step in our process of uniting energies, where we also honor identifying with a group other than your assigned-at-birth gender and exploring either group as you feel called. These are non-binary groups, with the awareness that classical yogic philosophy state we all have both the feminine and masculine essence inside us!
Moving upwards into the throat chakra students will learn about Kashmir Shaivism and the Sanskrit language, pronunciation, principles of chanting, and a wealth of mantra & deity practices. Progressing to the third eye the training becomes increasingly more subtle, as we encounter an array of Yogic meditations, explore Yogic Buddhism, and turn inward in silence. Culminating in the crown, trainees will receive kundalini awakening practices, learn Shakti mantra, Yogic ritual, and receive an initiation into the practice.
Each of our 18 days will also include a thorough overview in the anatomy/physiology of Yoga-Asana (postures), a comprehensive outlook on teaching methodology, an intensive dissection of major and minor poses, workshops on adjustments/alignment, and plenty of time for practice teaching. Not to mention time for students to be present in nature, reflect, swim, stargaze, and relax in quietude. This training will also include an excursion to a very special Balinese temple, and a chance to participate in a profound & ancient Balinese ritual.
For those looking to teach, this Yoga Teacher Training in Bali will provide a vast, comprehensive tool-kit for teaching physical postures, alignment, adjustments and sequencing methodologies, as well as pranayama, mantra, meditation, and more. The principles we instruct can be applied to any style of yoga you feel compelled to offer.
For students looking to deepen their understanding, this will be a dynamic expansion of both knowledge and practice. A sincere exploration of what it means to truly practice YOGA.
Nina polo wieja
Nina received her initial initiation into the science of yoga & 200HR certification through the Mukti Yoga School, on the beaches of Southern California. Finding a deep passion for the practice and its transformational quality, she soon after became one of the first Y12SR certified yoga instructors (Yoga and 12 Step Recovery), spending years teaching yoga as a service to individuals in recovery and AA. Nina went on to complete in-depth and residential trainings in Yoga Nidra, Classical Yogic Philosophy, Traditional Tantra, Vinyasa Krama (Classical Sequencing Techniques), and Hatha Yoga Asana with her heart-teacher Yogarupa Rod Stryker. She continues to study with Yogarupa in the Tantric lineage of Sri Vidya, and leads classes in Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Yoga Nidra (the yoga of guided deep relaxation). Nina is actively completing further trainings in Yoga Nidra as well as Mentorship with master teachers Tracee Stanley and Chanti Tacoronte-Perez, and finds ongoing inspiration from Elena Brower, Tommy Rosen, Elizabeth Gilbert & Brené Brown. Informed by the wisdom of ancient traditions, Nina moves her students through intentional asana, pranayama and meditation, always recalling the spirit of playfulness within such wisdom and a childlike sense of curiosity.
Hatha Yoga and Meditation entered Nina’s life at a time when she desperately needed it, and it was through the wisdom of yoga, meditation, and the kindness of her teachers that she reconnected with herself and her passion for life. Her goal in teaching is to offer others the doorway that she was offered into connection and joy, through these ancient and sacred practices.
Stephanie started practicing Yoga 15 years ago, and taught her first class shortly thereafter. She has since studied numerous lineages and paths, and became a senior Shivakali Yoga teacher after completing 200hr and 300hr Yoga Teacher Trainings with the Shivakali Yoga School in both Hawaii and Bali. Stephanie’s additional training includes Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Tantra and Tibetan meditation, Ayurvedic Therapy, Plant Medicine, and she is an active member of the Loyola Marymount University Yoga Therapy Program. She further spent many years as a Pilates instructor, and a lifetime as a professional performer in both aerial arts and dance. Through these expressive arts, Stephanie has spent her life discovering how by cultivating awareness and being in-tune with one’s body, we can allow feelings + spirit to be expressed freely through the physical form.
While Stephanie’s practice is an integration of all of these paths of study and self-expression, she remains a forever student of the wild earth. The deep jungles of the Amazon and plant spirits have taught her unconditional love, the importance of shadow work as a daily Sadhana, and the interconnectedness of all things. Her heartfelt motivation for practicing Yoga and sharing Yoga with others is Bodhicitta; to extend compassion for all sentient beings. She truly believes that when you practice Yoga for yourself you also practice for others, and by practicing with others this compassion becomes amplified and is extended to all beings everywhere.
Oliwa Newell is an accomplished musician and yogi who has been exploring, questioning, and practicing yoga for 20 years. He has performed in Kirtan ensembles for decades, has completed two 200hr Yoga Teacher Trainings with the Shivakali Yoga School, and has shared musically and assisted teachers in numerous other teacher trainings and retreats. Oliwa’s yogic practice is inspired by his optimistic yet concerned perception of the state of our world, and the beings by which it is inhabited. It is his hope that by learning to breathe, quieting the mind, bringing flexibility and strength to the body, and sharing a sense of connectedness we, as humans, may be empowered to realize solutions to the problems we face. And, that we may live a life of deep joy, wild wonder, and gentle understanding. In addition to Oliwa’s asana practice, his autodidacticism has guided him on a learning adventure through Eastern and Western philosophy, Vipassana Meditation, Non-Violent Communication, ballet/modern dance, natural sciences, psychology, civics, and art. His passion for performing and composing music has lead him around the world as an instrumentalist, producer and dj. Oliwa currently lives in the bohemian mountain town of Ojai, California, where he is a senior teacher at the Light and Space Yoga Studio.
